The S.A.S.

Albert enlisted to the North Lancashire Fusiliers in late 1940. Because of his enthusiasm for adventure, and promise of extra pay, he then took the opportunity to volunteer for No. 2 Commando Regiment. That Regiment was soon renamed the 11th Special Air Service (SAS) Battalion. Albert's son, Richard, was born a month later, while Albert was home on leave. Marjorie gave birth to Richard in the cellar of their family home during an air-raid. On the road to collect the midwife, Albert had to stop to take cover under his car, such was the ferocity of the bombing.

On 15th September 1941, the unit changed its name again to the 1st Parachute Battalion, but Albert joined the 2nd Parachute Battalion, on its formation, on 30th September 1941. By the end of the year, Albert had been promoted to Corporal.

During his initial training with No. 2 Commando Regiment, Albert was expected to take part in intensive military training and drills.
